Product Spotlight: Reindeer!
You know Rudolph and all the rest by name, but how much do you know about real reindeer? Check out these fascinating animals!

You know Dasher and Dancer, and Prancer and Vixen; Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. But do you recall…
… That reindeer are actually fascinating animals?
In the spirit of the holidays, our Product Spotlight this month is on reindeer. Now obviously, we don’t expect you to buy a reindeer from TJM. For that matter, we don’t even sell them.
But we do sell plenty of reindeer-themed promotional products every year, so we thought it would be a great time to take a look at the Arctic wonders themselves. Let’s start with some fun facts:
Fun Facts About Reindeer
- They Have Exceptional Vision: Reindeer can see ultraviolet light, which helps them spot predators and locate food in snowy environments.
- They Are Nomadic: Some reindeer herds migrate farther than any other land mammal, traveling more than the distance between New York and Los Angeles annually.
- Their Antlers Are Versatile Tools: Reindeer use their antlers not only for defense but also to dig through snow in search of food.
- They Have Natural Cold Protection: Their fur contains hollow hairs that trap air, providing buoyancy and insulation.
- They’re Highly Social: Reindeer form strong social connections within their herds, often displaying affectionate behaviors.

Plot Twist: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is WHAT?
Female.
Yes, you read that right. The beloved hero of the classic holiday TV special is certainly female – as are the other reindeer who pull Santa’s sleigh. Don’t take our word for it. Here’s scientific proof:

It comes down to the simple fact that male reindeer lose their antlers each autumn. Females don’t. So for Rudolph and crew to have antlers at Christmas time, they would have to be female.
Then again, if you approach the TV show from a strictly scientific standpoint, elves wouldn’t need dentists, and Bumbles wouldn’t bounce. And Yukon Cornelius’s sled dog team wouldn’t consist of a Saint Bernard, a dachshund, a cocker spaniel, a toy poodle and a beagle. So maybe we’ll just take that particular bit of information with a grain of salt.
Incidentally, if you look closely at Santa’s sleigh and reindeer as they fly at the end of the TV special, you’ll see the team is a little bit short. Despite recommendations for eight plus Rudolph, the team has only seven – including Rudolph.
Real Reindeer Are Amazing
Reindeer in the wild are just as interesting as our red-nosed friend. Reindeer, also known in North America as caribou, are adapted to survive in their native arctic and subarctic regions. They thick fur is double-layered to protect against extreme cold. Their hooves can change with the seasons, adapting to the ground conditions. In the summer, the hooves soften, allowing better traction on wet ground. In the winter they harden to better cut through snow and ice.
Of course, Rudolph is famous for his nose, which is pretty remarkable on real reindeer too. Their noses have specialized nasal passages that pre-warms the air they inhale to help keep them warm. Reindeer’s sensitive noses help them detect plants buried beneath the winter snow.
And guess what? Rudolph isn’t the only reindeer with a red nose. Some reindeer actually do have a red nose, thanks to very dense blood vessels that help them regulate their body temperature.
Reindeer Society
You think you have a big family? Reindeer have it beat. They live in huge herds that can number in the thousands! They migrate over vast distances, often more than 3,000 miles in a year.
That’s not all. They communicate by vocalization, body language and scent marking. The large herds help them find food, and protects them from predators.
Reindeer as Ecosystem Engineers
Speaking of environmental matters, reindeer are important to maintaining the health of arctic ecosystems. They prevent overgrowth and promote biodiversity by grazing on lichen, moss and other vegetation. Their hooves churn the soil, helping recycle nutrients and encourage plant regeneration.
Reindeer also are an important part of the food chain for arctic predators such as wolves and bears, for whom they are a primary food source. (We know, don’t think about it too much.) The predator-prey relationship regulates the size of the reindeer herds, preventing them from becoming too large for the ecosystem.
Reindeer Promotional Products
You knew we were gonna get to this, right? Reindeer promotional products are typically linked to the holiday season (duh!), but they can be a meaningful item the rest of the year as well.
You can always celebrate the joy of Christmas with Rudolph and his (her?) pals on custom lanyards, patches, coins and other items. But you don’t have to limit reindeer images to the holidays.
Realistic reindeer images can be used as logos for a business or to promote environmental awareness groups. These majestic animals project a strong, resilient image that can serve multiple causes well.
The choice of how to present reindeer in your marketing material is up to you. You can choose to go either cartoonish with Rudolph-esque creatures or go for a more realistic modern element that works best for educational campaigns and nature-focused products.
Consider the possibilities. If you’re running a holiday theme, you can include reindeer images on seasonal cards, gift wrap and in digital content. Reindeer-shaped ornaments, custom plush toys, and themed stationery make excellent giveaways during events.
For environmental concerns not linked to any one season, you can add reindeer to tote bags, mugs and apparel with a conservation oriented theme. You can add reindeer facts and other printed material to reinforce the message.
Why Reindeer Matter to Us All
As you can see, reindeer can teach us all the values of adaptability, family life, and how to thrive in extreme conditions. Even Rudolph can show us the importance of not being afraid to be different, to stand out from the crowd. And of course, sometimes you need a little bit of faith and some holiday magic to succeed.
So come on, embrace the wonder of the season, and the fascinating world of reindeer. You’ll be glad you did! And if you should happen to need reindeer-related promotional products, TJM Promos is your Santa (and Rudolph)-approved reindeer headquarters!
