Here at TJM, we're just as excited for the release of the iPhone 6 as you are! In our excitement for the official release on Friday, we decided to get a feel for the new phones by using our laser cutter in the warehouse to create accurate, full-size mock-ups of both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
First, we found the exact dimensions of the phones online so we could ensure the replicas would be accurate and to scale. We wanted each phone to look and feel exactly how they will upon release to get a better idea of the sizes (especially the larger iPhone 6 Plus.)
Next, we found some spare acrylic in the warehouse that we would use to actually "make" the phones. We use sheets of acrylic to secure our custom dog tags and wristbands while manufacturing and engraving, and the material was perfect for our iPhone project.
To achieve an accurate thickness, we had to cut the acrylic sheet three times for each phone, then "secure" them together. By secure, we mean we used the same standard Scotch⢠tape found on every desk in America. No expense spared here!
While cutting the acrylic, we didn't just cut out the shape of the phones. We also engraved where the earpieces are at the top of the phones and the "screens," along with square icons on the screen. This helped us better understand the actual size of not only the phone as a whole, but the screen size as well.
Once each phone was fully "assembled," we passed the replicas around the office to compare with our current phones. One thing we heard often was just how big the iPhone 6 Plus actually is, and many were concerned about how it would fit in a pocket or purse, especially with a case.
We had many people say they were looking forward to upgrading from their current phone, and some â including our marketing director â already pre-ordered their phone ahead of Friday's release.
Will the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus live up to the hype? As of this writing, they're already the most pre-ordered phones in history. Reviews are pouring in, and there is plenty of buzz around both products. Most review scores are positive, and the number of pre-orders ensure the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be the talk of the town for the year to come — Â or at least until the next model is announced.
Are you picking up the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus? Sticking with your current phone and don't care to upgrade yet? Hate smartphones altogether? Let us know in the comments, or on our Facebook or Twitter pages!
EDIT: We should also probably mention the phone shown for comparison in the photos is the iPhone 5.
EDIT EDIT: Scotch⢠tape sold separately.
