Timeless Style for a California Sheriff's Office

Rick Cundiff

We’re always honored to be chosen as the challenge coin provider to law enforcement agencies. We know how much custom coins can mean to the dedicated public servants who strive every day to keep others safe.

Recently, we provided coins to the Ventura County, California, Sheriff’s Office. The nearly 1,300 men and women under the command of Sheriff James Fryhoff cover an area of 1,882 square miles, ranging from rugged mountains to beaches. This includes providing police services to the cities of Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai and Thousand Oaks.

The Sheriff’s Office ordered coins for the department’s Headquarters Station.

“Our Headquarters Patrol Station wanted a challenge coin to represent the station, and as a token of recognition to the sworn and professional staff assigned to the station,” said Administrative Sergeant Kevin Kipp.

Commemorating Both the Department and California Heritage

Our graphic artists collaborated with the Sheriff’s Office to craft a beautiful coin that honors both the Sheriff’s Office and California heritage. The offset printed images allow for extraordinary detail.

The traditional round shape, in polished gold features an iconic sheriff’s star badge at its front center. At the center of that badge is a rendition of Mission San Buenaventura. The historic mission, founded in 1782, was the ninth of 21 such missions founded by Spanish settlers in California.

The town that formed around the mission was known first as San Buenaventura, which remains the official name today. Since 1891, it has been commonly known as the City of Ventura.

The words “Deputy Sheriff” and “Ventura County” frame the mission from above and below. The black lettering stands out. At the bottom of the star, the number one refers to the Sheriff.

Behind the badge is a sunburst pattern of blue and gold that adds an elegant contrast to the gold star. Starting from the right side of the star, a blue river runs through to the lower left side of the coin. Bold, green land areas line both sides of the river. Both signify an important feature of Ventura County, Sgt. Kipp said.

“The land and river are significant because our county has a large agricultural community -- primarily various fruits/ vegetables, avocados, flowers, and strawberries -- and the Santa Clara River flows through the unincorporated areas of the city of Oxnard and Ventura County that are patrolled by deputies assigned to the Headquarters Patrol Station.”

The combination of the green land and blue river add a striking pop of color to the design. A fine gold border surrounds the image.

The words “Ventura County” frame the top of the design, and “Sheriff’s Office” frames the bottom. A second thin gold border encircles the words.

The coin’s reverse features a picture of a Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle parked facing the ocean near sunset. It symbolizes another part of the area patrolled by deputies assigned to Headquarters, Sgt. Kipp said.

Above the scene are the words “A Tradition of Service,” and at the bottom, “Integrity and Honor.”  A thin gold border surround the image. The phrase “West County Patrol” appears above the image, and “Headquarters Station” below. A palm tree on either side of the center image completes the design and adds a clear Southern California reference.

The polished gold finish adds a classic elegance to the design. A wave-cut edge adds a final touch of style that catches the eye and adds luster to the design.

Classic Style, Iconic Images

This timeless coin is an outstanding example of classic challenge coin design.

The style includes an iconic law enforcement image in the sheriff’s star. The other features specifically honor the heritage of the area the department serves and the importance of the river and agriculture to the region.

The response to the coins has been positive, Sgt. Kipp noted.

“The personnel who have received them have complimented the design and have been pleased with the finished product,” he said.

The Headquarters Station chose to order from TJM because other units within the department had positive experiences dealing with, he added, citing “word of mouth reputation, quality of product and final price” as the key factors.

He praised our customer service as well.

“Ordering, design, shipping, all were easy and fast,” he said. “We were very happy with the entire process.”

A Legacy of Service

We appreciate the vote of confidence from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for our customer service, quality and prices. Like the dedicated personnel of Sheriff Fryhoff’s department, we strive to do our best every day.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has served Ventura County since 1873, and has helped make the county one of the safest in the nation. “This devotion to duty continues to be our legacy to Ventura County,” Sgt. Kipp said.

We at TJM Promos are honored to have been able to contribute in a small way to that legacy.
