Throughout our history, TJM has produced hundreds of thousands of patches. Everything from patches for a research lab with a project aboard a SpaceX rocket to patches for the production crew of the hit AMC television show Walking Dead, we've just about seen it all.
For the latest issue of the TJMpact Newsletter, we're covering The Portland Patch Project way up north in Portland, Maine. The Portland Patch Project caught our eye because of the artistic style of their patches, each drawn by a different artist each month. As many of us at TJM are artists ourselves, we decided to get in touch with Kris Johnsen, the creator of the project.
"I started it up about a year and a half ago now and each month we feature a different artist," said Johnsen. "Most are local to Maine but we're slowly branching out â our last patch was illustrated by an artist in Wales. However, most artists are in New England since that is where I am. We also do special releases here and there, usually with bands or other businesses. You can see most of our process on Instagram at (@PortlandPatchProject)."
"We sell the patches mostly on our website PortlandPatchProject.com, and at about 10-15 stores around New England," Johnsen continued. "It's pretty fun working with new artists all the time and I would say 99% of them have never had embroidery or anything like this made from their art so it's always interesting for them as well. A few have even made patches on their own after doing one for me."
