The 2013 Little League World Series is complete! Japan heads home as the Little League champions for the second consecutive year. More than 28,000 people were in attendance, with millions more at home watching on television, as Japan defeated the United States' West Region, 6-4.
On Saturday, the top two teams of each region met to determine who would go to the Series title game. In the United States bracket, Chula Vista, California from the West region and Westport, Connecticut from the New England region met for the U.S. championship game. California won the game handily, with a 12-1 victory, and advanced to the title game. Connecticut headed to the third place game played before the championship.
For the International bracket, Tokyo from the Japan region and Tijuana from the Mexico region played in the International championship game. The game was tied at two until the top of the 6th inning when Japan scored to make the game 3-2. Mexico was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, and Japan took the win.
Before the championship game, the losing teams from the bracket championship games met in the consolation third place game. Even though it wasn't for the title, both teams played their hearts out in what ended up being a very close, high-scoring game. Mexico prevented a last inning charge by New England to win the game 15-14.
In the title game, both teams entered the game undefeated. Japan won the tournament last year, and was looking to continue their success. The state of California has the most Little League World Series wins in the United States with seven and was hoping to add another to the list. The title game was an exciting one, with many ups and downs. With Japan taking the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, California had one shot to put more runs on the board. They couldn't put anything together, and Japan won the game on a double play at second base.
While the title game was between two powerhouse teams that have made multiple appearances in the Series, the rearranged brackets give other countries more of an opportunity in the future. With the popularity of baseball only increasing in areas like Australia and Eastern Europe, we're sure to see plenty more from them in the future.
